Chapter 7
Plans Coming Together
A week had passed, and the distillery employees were excited about the bonus program.
Ghost and Matt rode their horses daily around the estate, and practiced their martial arts moves daily as Charles worked with them.
When Ghost and Matt were not working on their martial arts training, they brushed and cared for all the horses.
George had acquired a number of his books and spent time going from book store to book store and setting up displays. George was very happy when book stores contacted him for more copies of his book.
George gave them the name and address of the publisher, and asked them to order directly from the publisher.
Charles and George stopped at the Winchester Saddle Shop and checked with Hollis James regarding a rifle scabbard that he had seen when he bought the saddles.
âHow are you Mr. Crawford,â Hollis said with a smile as Charles entered.
âHello Hollis,â Charles answered, âIâm interested in a rifle scabbard,â Charles said as he walked over to the one that he had spotted earlier.
âYes,â Hollis said as Charles picked up the scabbard, âThat is one of the finest I have ever made,â he explained.
âYes, it is a fine piece of craftsmanship,â Charles said as he examined the ornate sketching and the fine hair lining.
âSome gentlemen donât want their rifle to show rub marks caused by the leather, so I lined this one from calf hide and left the hair on it. It creates a smooth glide in and out of the scabbard for your rifle,â Hollis explained.
âThe art work caught my eye,â Charles explained, âAnd it feels like a quality piece of leather.â
âYes it is,â Hollis explained, âI was going to make a saddle covering out of it, however; I would have had to waste too much of the leather, so I made a scabbard from it.â
âIâll take it,â Charles said.
Charles and George left the saddle shop after Charles placed the new scabbard in place and put his old scabbard on Georgeâs saddle.
As they rode through town, the telegraph operator stepped out and flagged Charles down. âI have a telegram for you sir,â he said as he handed Charles a receipt slip to sign and then handed him the telegram.
Charles opened the telegraph, âItâs from Cappy,â Charles said, âHe wants us to come to Petersfield, he has drawings and plans for us to approve.â
They turned and rode to the train depot, purchased two tickets to Petersfield and were told the train would be leaving in an hour.
Charles bought two tickets and then they rode to the distillery and asked Greg Fulmer to mount up and come with them to the train depot and return the horses to the distillery stables.
An hour later the train pulled out of Winchester and headed southeast towards Petersfield.
The train pulled into Petersfield at 1:30 P.M., carriages, were waiting for passengers, and Charles hired one to take him to the Petersfield Construction Co., and asked him to wait for the return trip to the train depot.
Inside, Cappy greeted them and asked them into his office.
